House. C16 or earlier former open hall house, refronted in early
C19. Timber frame exposed at rear with pargetting in panels
between, painted brick rear wing, and stuccoed brick front.
Steep old red tile roofs, front range hipped and rear wing half-
hipped. 2-storeys and attic street range in 2 parts. Long left
part has low parapet, plinth, raised band at eaves and is 3
windows long. Flat topped 2-light casement dormer. Large
central chimney plastered. 2-light flush casement windows with
small. panes on 1st floor, and 2 similar windows to right of door
on ground floor. C19 shopfront with door and divided window to
left linked with moulded fascia on brackets. Short, slightly
recessed right hand bay has large rectangular carriage entrance
with double gates, small 3-light casement window near eaves
level, and main entrance door to left of carriageway. 4 panel
door in moulded doorcase with flat hood on shaped brackets.
Original building extends over carriageway, carried on heavy
close-set joists and jettied and hipped to rear with wide spaced
timber frame and tension bracing exposed. Good C17 staircase
inside. (Pevsner (1977) 273: RCHM (1911) 69).
