House. C15, re-modelled early C17 with later additions and alterations.
Timber framed, partly of cruck construction, with plaster infill and painted
brick cladding, plain tile roofs. Now cruciform in plan consisting of a
2-bay former hall to north with a cross-wing projecting to either side on
south, to south of this a lower late C16 or early C17 range, probably also
timber framed. 2 storeys, dentilled eaves cornice to hall (east side);
framing: exposed externally to west gable of cross-wing, square panels and
straight tension braces, V-struts from collar; 2 late C19 casements below
eaves to hall range (east side) with segmental-headed casement (divided in
2 by brick pillar) to centre on ground floor; cross-wing to east has one
late C19 casement on each floor, that on ground floor with segmental head;
entrance in angle between hall and cross-wing with C20 half-glazed door;
ridge stack immediately above, re-built in mid-C20 red brick with late C19
red brick end stacks to gable of hall and east gable of cross-wing.
Interior: one true cruck truss in centre of hall range, partly visible
on ground floor, has Alcock apex type L2; inglenook fireplace below ridge
stack and chamfered spine beams throughout with stepped and run-out stops;
dressed sandstone walled cellar below lower range to south may be C15 or
C16 and retains deep revealed openings at ground level. Alcock (1981),
p.143.
