Gate lodge to Yeaton Peverey. Circa 1892, by Aston Webb. Snecked red
sandstone ashlar, with partly timber framed first floor (closely-spaced
imposts with rail). Slate roofs. Irregular L-plan. In a Domestic
Revival style. 2 storeys. South-east front: moulded wooden cornice
to timber framed first floor to left, and jettied gable and to left with
shallow ogee-moulded cambered tie-beams and moulded brackets, moulded barge
boards with finial; parapeted gable end to right with stone coping. Stone
ridge stack off-centre to left and integral stone end stack to right, both
with moulded cornice. Central first-floor 2-light wooden casement and
ground-floor leaded 2-light chamfered mullioned stone window to left with
dripstone, carried around corner to left. Full-height canted stone bay
to right with string course, moulded cornice, and battlemented parapet
with shaped merlons and moulded coping; 1-:2-:1-light chamfered mullioned
stone windows with dripstones. Central boarded door with strap hinges,
chamfered reveals, and moulded elliptical arch with returned hoodmould.
Left-hand gable end with first-floor 3-light wooden mullioned and transomed
casement and ground-floor 2-light chamfered mullioned stone window to right
with dripstone. Right-hand return front with string course and cornice
carried round from bay; ground-floor chamfered one-light window to left.
Rear wing with double-chamfered plinth, string course, moulded cornice,
and parapet with moulded coping, ramped up to corners and with globe finial
at apex of gable. Gable end with first-floor 2-light chamfered mullioned
window and ground-floor one-light chamfered window. Ground-floor 2-light
chamfered mullioned window to side. Interior not inspected. This is
one of a pair of lodges to Yeaton Peverey (q.v.), also by Aston Webb.
The drive from Shrewsbury Lodge and the associated gateway (q.v.) is now
disused (January 1987). Also known as North Lodge, Yeaton Lodge and The
Lodge.
