4/22 Foston Hall
II
House. 1825 with earlier origins. Built for Francis Simpson. White brick
in Flemish bond, Westmorland slate roof. One wing demolished, leaving main
dining room and former service wing on T-shaped plan. 2 sections to main
facade each of 2 storeys with 2 first floor windows, that to right being
taller and having an attic. To right: canted bay to ground floor with
full-length unequal 15-pane sash flanked by sashes with glazing bars, with
cnannelled lintels. Moulded modillion cornice. First floor sashes with
glazing bars. Moulded cornice. C20 dormer window in hipped roof. Eaves
stacks to left and rear range. To left: 2 unequal 9-pane sashes. First
floor is a later addition and has sashes with glazing bars. Moulded
cornice. Left end stack. Interior contains trusses of earlier roof, now
superseded by C19 roof. Earlier roof appears to be of upper cruck
construction with collar and cruck spurs. Apex not visible. The site is
said to be that of earlier manor house, and it is therefore probable that
the house of 1825 is built round the earlier house. Repairs to the house
are said to have revealed an earlier brick structure cased by 1825
brickwork.
