House and forge, now all one house. Early C17 house, brick front early
C18, catslide rear extension and brick forge extending to N mid C18.
Timber frame with brick infill exposed externally only at rear, red
brick, steep old red tile roofs, forge hipped at N end. A 2-storeys and
attic, 2-cells, lobby entry plan house, facing E, with gabled rear stair
tower, catslide rear outshut, gabled front porch, and single-storey
brick forge attached on N with entrance in N end facing road. E front
has 3 windows to upper floor and central battened door in porch. Attics
lit by gable end windows. 3-light casement windows, renewed. Timber
frame exposed inside, with narrow central chimney and entrance bay
flanked by a single large bay on each side. S room more important with
axial ovolo-moulded ceiling beam c.1620 and exposed chamfered joists. N
room similar but with simple chamfer to axial beam. Ovolo-moulded
fireplace lintel to each room and fireplaces originally on floor above,
but chimney stack removed as unsafe and replaced by new staircase.
Bathroom in former rear stair tower. Swept-jowled posts and straight
braces to wallplate. Wide-spaced studs, framing for blocked windows in
rear wall, clasped-purlin roof on collar-and-queen-strut trusses with
straight wind-braces. Original attic floor on chamfered beams and square
sawn joists, and full-height framed partition enclosing the chimney bay.
Corner cupboard built in NE corner of ground floor N room with shaped
shelves and hermicycle head in upper part with double doors and panelled
door to lower part. Brought from 3, St. Agnell's Cottages, near Hemel
Hempstead.
