12/97 The Old Mill
GV II
Mill and miller's house. Late C18 with C19 alteration. Dressed sandstone,
with herringbone-tooled quoins, sills and lintels; pantile roof. Single-
cell, direct-entry plan house, with mill to the side. 2-storey, 2-window
front to house, with 1½-storey, 3-bay mill and single-storey wheel chamber
to right. House: 4-panel door beneath gabled, lattice porch with finial.
3-light, large-pane horizontal sliding sash to left of door and similar
window above; later inserted 2-light window to first floor left. Stepped
eaves course. Coped gables and plain kneelers. End stacks. Mill: board
doors to mill and wheel chamber on either side of 4-pane sash. Similar
later window inserted above with board lifing door to right. Timber lintel
to wheel chamber door. Coped gable to right. Interior of mill: wooden
water-wheel, probably under-shot, with timber paddles. Iron pit wheel to
centre chamber. Grain hopper in chamber to left. First floor not
inspected. The mill was in use until 1914, when the 2 mile long leat from
Loskey Beck was drained following the drowning of 2 children.
