Hunting Lodge, now private house, late C17 or early C18 with later C18 extensions
left and right and further C19 and C20 alterations. Flemish bond brickwork with
unusually large bricks. Right hand bay in English bond. Vertical band of
headers below right stack. Hipped, tiled roof with brick stacks a little way
along the ridge at each end. Single storey with attics, 5 window range.
Hipped dormers. Ground floor openings under segmental brick heads. 2 and 3
light C20 casements with horizontal glazing bars. Glazed doors second and
fourth bays from right.
Internally the building has some shallow chamfered ceiling beams and a deeply
chamfered ceiling beam with cyma stops. The latter has wrought-iron hooks,
possibly for hanging venison. There is an open fireplace with chamfered
bressummer. The building is of historic interest in that it was a hunting
lodge occupied by a game warden of Cranborne Chase. (RCHM, Dorset, vol.IV,
p.18, no.3.)
