7/64 Barn and adjoining store, The Moat


GV II

Former barn and stable, now barn and store: second half C18;
Flemish bond brickwork, tiled roof. Five-bay barn, 2-bay, 2-storey
stable. Elevation facing house, central boarded, double doors,
with small, personal door in one: stone hinge blocks, steep
segmental brick arch over. Walls each side reduce half-brick in
thickness just below mid height, with pilaster buttresses above at
bay divisions, except in extreme left bay where wall remains at
lower thickness for full height. Three slit air vents in plinth on
each side, with further slit in thick, upper wall section. Lancet
with ogee head in each recessed panel, infilled with brick grill.
Parapet gables; iron weathervane on ridge near left gable. Similar
lancet in head of left gable. To right lower wing, stone plinth,
boarded door up 2 steps, below cambered brick arch. Top third of
wall panelled as barn, with similar lancets, but with projecting
brick impost at springing of head. Parapet gable.
Internally, slight internal buttresses: slit air vents splayed:
tie beam trusses with collar and angle struts, 2 pairs purlins,
square ridge. Stable lofted, truss as barn, but plank ridge: slit
air vents in gable. Stable slightly later than barn. Timber shed
built against stable not of special interest.
