Description

COLEBROOKE
SX 79 NW
4/82 Road Down Farmhouse
-
- II

Farmhouse, formerly 2 cottages. Late C17. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone
rubble or cob stack topped with C20 brick; interlocking red tile roof (formerly
thatch).
Originally a pair of contemporary 1-room plan cottages facing south and separated
by axial stack serving back-to-back fireplaces. Small C19 store on right (east)
end. 2 storeys. Originally symmetrical 2-window front with doorways each end.
Now C19 plank door behind C20 monopitch and corrugated asbestos roofed porch at
left end but right end door now blocked by C20 casement with glazing bars. The
other windows are oak-framed casements with glazing bars and may be original. The
ground floor windows have internal iron glazing hars of circular section. Gable-
ended roof with deep eaves on a series of timber brackets. Rear wall is blind. On
right end is a small agricultural store with cob rear wall, framed front and leanto
roof.
Interior: both rooms have original crossbeams, soffit-chamfered with straight cut
stops. Original fireplaces are blocked. Roof not inspected but its low pitch
suggests that original replaced in C19.
