Description

ST OO NE KENTISBEARE HIGH STREET, Kentisbeare
8/104 Nos 3 and 4
-
GV II
2 dwellings, formerly 3 or more cottages, but originally possibly a single
farmhouse. C17, altered in the C19 and C20. Roughcast cob with stone, the left
hand end wall completely of random rubble. Hipped and half-hipped asbestos slate
roof with red ridge tiles. The original plan is difficult to establish, the
building consists of a single-depth range (running parallel to High Street) with a
rear wing forming overall an L-shaped plan. It may have been a 4-room baffle entry
plan house with a service room to the right of the entry; 3 axial stacks, those to
the right each heating 2 rooms; brick shaft. A late C20 external lateral stack has
been added to the rear of the house. 2 storeys, set on a slope, each doorway
approached by external steps.
Exterior Front: 5 window range; four 3-light casement windows, and one early C19
casement of 2-lights. Ground floor, 3 doorways set high. 2 of the three 4-light
windows are C17 (or early C18), with wooden surrounds and mullions deeply chamfered,
and both with 3 fixed lights; one single-light window with chamfered surround. The
other windows (1 of 4 lights, 1 of 3 and 1 of 2) are all C20. Right-hand end with
early C20 2-storeyed canted bay. Rear, with C20 additions (including a first floor
bathroom on brick piers), retains 2 C18 or early C19 casement windows with pegged
surround, one (of 3 lights, each with 8 leaded panes) with some crown glass.
Interior not inspected. Nos 3 and 3 face nos 1 and 2 across High Street, and form
an attractive group.
