Farmhouse. 1820-30. Slatestone rubble wells. Double depth shallow pitched
hipped slate roof. Rendered brick stack at each end and brick stack to rear
service range.
Plan: double depth plan 2 rooms wide but not quite symmetrical. The 2 principal
rooms are at the front and rear on the left-hand side and interconnecting. The
front room opens out of the entrance hall at the other side of which is a smaller
room at the front. Behind this runs a narrow staircase at the side of the hall.
A passage extends from the rear of the hall to a back door and it has a kitchen to
its right. A probably contemporary service wing extends to the rear of the house
at the right-hand end with dairy, pantry, etc.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3 window front of original 16-pane sash windows
taller on the ground floor and with brick surrounds. Central Doric porch with
fluted columns and deep flat hood. The sides of the porch have been glazed in and
it has a glazed door with panelled door behind. Service range is set back from
right-hand end of front with flimsy C20 addition at the front of it. Rear
elevation of main range similar to front but with central 6-panel door. The
service wing projects from the left-hand end also with 16-pane sashes and a large
late C19 leanto built onto the end of it.
Interior: has fairly complete joinery including panelled doors and shutters,
built-in settle and cupboard in the kitchen and very simple staircase. The 2
principal rooms have simple moulded cornices and the smaller front room has a
moulded ceiling band. The entrance hall has a modillion cornice with superimposed
trailing vine motif. Marble chimneypiece in front left-hand room.
This is a very unaltered example of a Regency farmhouse.
