Helwell Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Circa late C18/early C19 with a possibly earlier near wing. Whitewashed
and rendered, the main block with a"slate roof, hipped at ends behind parapets, the
rear wing with a slate roof, hipped at end ; end stacks to the main block.
Plan: Double depth main range, 2 rooms wide with a central stair hall ; no main
entrance on the front, the house entered through an early C19 door on the left return
or into the rear left wing. Rear centre recess with steps down, presumably to a
cellar.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 4-bay front elevation with French windows to the
ground floor with glazing bars, the 2 left-hand windows with canted heads ; 4 16-pane
early C19 first floor sashes.
The left return has a C19 panelled door with a rectangular fanlight with diamond
glazing bars ; 2 first floor and 1 ground floor 16-pane sash. The rear elevation of
the main block has one C19 French window, 2 C19 first floor sashes with glazing bars
and 1 C20 window ; 3 attic dormers. This elevation is recessed in the centre with
steps down to a cellar. Single storey brick addition in angle between main block and
wing.
Interior: The rear wing has a small, slightly chamfered cross beam. Early C19
joinery in the main range includes shutters and a stick baluster stair with a
wreathed handrail.
