House. C16 or earlier with later alterations. Timber framed and plastered.
Red plain tiled roof. Hipped to left with gabled crosswing to right. Brick
plinth. Large external red brick chimney stack to left with date 1757 and a
very large stack to right with moulded panel IV 1588 SEP 14 and the molet emblem
of the De Vere family. 2 storeys, attics and cellar with attic window to
gable. 3:1 window ranges to ground and first floors, mainly 3 light vertically
sliding sashes with glazing bars to upper sashes. Central C20 plank and muntin
door with red tiled porch on brackets. Brackets to gable band and moulded
central band. There is a C19 wing to centre rear with an attached outbuilding.
Wing to rear left. This latter wing hipped to left and forming a rear
courtyard. Reputed to be one of the original hunting lodges to Hedingham
Castle. Internal features include 5 fireplaces to main stack, 1 with a
segmental brick arch and plastered Tudor arch to attic. Heavy stop chamfered
bridging joists and some exposed frame with mullion window. A C20 fire
destroyed the main range roof. RCHM 39.
