Detached cottage, formerly 3. C16, C17 and C19. Limewashed or rendered rubble,
thatched roof. A long plan in single room depth, the right half with slightly
higher roof level, probably raised: the original may have been a long-house.
The whole is set with the back wall against the rising ground level. 2 storeys;
ground floor has four 2-light and one single casements, and at first floor are
five 2-light, most with glazing bars. Towards left end a C20 door in glazed
porch with thatched hood; a former doorway is situated at point between 2 brick
ridge stacks, now with C20 window. Left gable, on street, has large external
stack with, to right, a 2-light C20 casement at each level. Back mainly plain,
but 2-light at ground level near gable end, small deep-set single light at mid
height, and another 2-light at ground level, left, then 2-light over single
light far left in section with higher eaves. Lower building attached at far
gable end is not of special interest. Interior: a former cross-passage has
fireplaces backing on both sides; room to left has further room, possibly former
dairy, now kitchen, and room to right, with bressumer fire and cloam oven partly
under spiral stair, at front of building, has an outer room which formerly had
a smoking chamber. Two major transverse chamfered beams. Roof partly inspected
has early principals. Some C19 doors to strap hinges. A C16 2-light wood
mullioned casement with arched lights said to have been removed, in the C20,
from back wall in room at gable end.
