Description

LODDISWELL VILLAGE CENTRE, New Road
SX 74 NW
5/114 Corner Cottage
GV II
House at road junction, possibly part of former Inn. C17 and C19. Limewashed
or rendered rubble, asbestos-cement slate roof. The building, which appears
to be a wing of a formerly larger unit is set against the slope of the ground
on the New Road side, and attached to The Old School House (q.v.) at its south
end; a stair turret projects on the entrance side at the junction with the Old
School House, and there is an eaves stack, centre back. Front in 2 storeys;
at ground floor a small 2-light casement between C20 glazed door to glazed
conservatory porch, left, and a plank door in wider blocked opening, right,
and below a 3-light glazing-bar casement. A very small stair light to return
wall of projecting turret. Right gable has one 16-pane sash; back has a 16-pane
sash at eaves, and an early 3-light glazing bar casement. Most windows to
exposed wood lintols. A flight of 5 stone steps leads to a landing and a large
blocked opening near the gable end. Interior not inspected. This is part of
an important group with The Old School House and Congregational Church (q.v.)
in a visually significant position in the centre of the village.
