The Old Well House

House. Early C17 with mid-C18, mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Part timber-
framed with rendered infill on limestone rubble base, part coursed limestone
rubble and handmade brick; slate and shingled roof and large limestone ridge
stack which has three C20 square stacks. Hall and cross-wing plan; hall part
is probably of three framed bays aligned north/south with a timber-framed rear
lean-to and a large chimney at the south end forming a baffle-entry plan. The
cross-wing is of two bays and is situated at the south end enclosing the chimney.
Single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: three panels from sill to wall-
plate, no roof trusses visible externally. West front elevation: windows are
C20 casements; ground floor has a square single-light window, a large cross-
casement, and a 3-light window with a cambered head. There are three raking-
top dormers, the outer ones with 3-light windows and the central one with a 6-
light window. At the right end in the angle with the cross-wing is a lean-to
C20 brick porch with C20 door and there are C20 garage doors at the left end.
The cross-wing gable end has a 3-light casement at ground floor and attic level,
the ground floor one has a cambered head. There is a Phoenix fire insurance
mark on the south wall. At the north end is a C20 lean-to addition. Interior
not inspected but said to retain its roof structure and large fireplace.
