4/27 Stables at Caythorpe Court

Stable block, circa 1900, by Sir R. Blomfield. Stucco with ashlar dressings,
2 tall brick ridge stacks and hipped stone slate roof. Main block of
3 bays and single storey plus attics is flanked by seven single storey
bays having later C20 2 light casements. These flanking wings terminate
in small louvered cupolas with lead roofs and ball finials from which
2 further ranges of buildings run at right angles. The fourth side of the
stable court is closed by a wall with a central opening flanked by piers
with ball finials. The main block has an advanced central entry bay with
hipped roof containing a wide segmental headed doorway with ashlar lintel
and hood mould. To left and right are long 6 light casement windows.
Above the doorway is a 3 light casement window and to either side are single
3 light casement dormers under tiled gabled roofs with decorative studding
in the gables. At the centre of the ridge is a timber cupola in a C17 style
with a glazed base containing a clock and having a moulded cornice with a
domed and pinnacled lead roof.
