Replica of ruins of former Liverpool Castle. From 1912, built for
Lord Leverhulme; uncompleted. Squared gritstone. Almost rectangular
bailey with great hall etc on north side, gatehouse on each side, circular
corner towers. Gothic style, with triangular-headed arched doorways and
embrasures; three semi-circular arches from bailey to gatehouse; remains of
stone spiral staircase at north west corner. Item is principal feature of
park laid out (to design of T.H. Mawson) by Lord Leverhulme for the use and
enjoyment of the inhabitants of the County Borough of Bolton for ever.
Item now (1985) fenced in. Reference: M.D. Smith Leverhulme's Rivington
