Part of shaft of cross, probably pre-Conquest, now used as pedestal of
guidepost probably early C18. Gritstone. The remains of the cross shaft
is rectangular in section, c.l metre high, carved on all 4 sides: north,
possibly the legs of a figure; south, intersecting zig zags making a
vertical succession of diamonds with grosses in the centres; west,
geometrical, like Greek key; and east, uncertain. Mounted on the top is a
square slab, like a table, lettered on all 4 sides: north, "TO. PRESTON";
south, "TO. BOULTON"; west, "TO. WIGGAN"; and east, "TO. BLAGBURN". Upper
surface bears marks of former fixture, possibly a sundial.
