2/144 Bolton Hall Farmhouse
17.4.67 (Formerly listed as Bolton
Hall)
II
Farmhouse. Probably late C17. Coursed squared stone with quoins,
graduated stone slate roof. Double-depth 2-bay plan. Two storeys,
symmetrical, with gable chimneys; central single-storey gabled porch with
side door, single-light window in front gable wall; 2 deeply-recessed
chamfered mullion 3-light windows at 1st floor, another at ground floor to
the right, a little square firewindow near the right corner, and to the
left of the porch a formerly mullioned 3-light window altered as a
casement. Left gable wall has one C19 window on each floor including the
attic. Rear has a doorway in the centre, a 4-light window to the right and
two 3-light windows at 1st floor, a mono-pitch roofed extension at ground
floor of 2nd bay covering another window: all these windows like those in
front. Interior: unusual double-depth plan with very thick stone internal
partition walls; stone corbels supporting beams with bead moulding
(probably replacing originals). Historical comment: unusual combination of
advanced double-depth plan and symmetrical facade with very conservative
window type (usually found in early C17).
