GV II
Three tomb chests with side walls abutting one another, to Richard Lonsdale
(d.1776) Ellen Lonsdale (d.1770) and John Lonsdale (d.1816). Dressed stone
with panelled sides, lettered and decorated lids. The three lids are in
matching style, with lengthy inscriptions in shouldered panels, the spandrels
in the upper corners decorated in relief with winged faces in primitive style.
The inscription of the first identifies Richard Lonsdale of this Town "Corn
Chandler", the 2nd gives Ellen as wife of John Lonsdale "MERCHANT of this
Town", the word "merchant" appearing in a hollow caused by erasure of some
other word.
