Farmhouse. Circa mid - late C17. Possibly a remodelling of an earlier house, some
C19 refurbishment. Colourwashed and plastered, cob and stone rubble, the left end
wall rebuilt in concrete block after a collapse; corrugated asbestos roof, half-
hipped at left end, gabled at right end (formerly thatched); back to back fireplaces
in an axial stack to left of centre, right end stack, both with handmade brick
shafts.
Plan: A single depth 3 room plan with a passage entrance to right of centre with a
modern stair to the rear of the passage. Hall in the centre, lower end parlour to
the right, inner room kitchen with a straight service stair rising against the rear
wall. The roof construction, although not seen in detail at time of survey, appears
to be post C17 and the house may have been raised in the C18. Plainer carpentry in
the inner room suggests that this may have been added or rebuilt in the C18.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Long 6 window front with a probably C19 or C20 gabled porch to
the passage to right of centre with a half-glazed C19 or C20 front door, C20 glazed
porch to the left with a separate entrance into the left hand (inner) room. Mixture
of C19 and C20 sashes and casements with timber glazing bars.
Interior: The left hand room has a rough exposed crossbeam. The other 2 rooms have
C17 chamfered crossbeams and half beams with step stops and a jetty like feature is
preserved in the hall above the fireplace which is said to have had a fireback dated
1666 (information from owner). Good C19 fireplaces with iron grates survive.
Roof Not seen in detail but appears to be C18.
A handsome, large farmhouse with C17 carpentry and other features likely to survive
behind wall plaster.
