House, early C17th. Slobbered rubble with slate roof. T-plan, 2 storeys.
West wall of 5 bays with weathered plinth. Windows have inner hollow chamfer,
outer chamfer, and hood. On the ground floor the window to bay one is blocked,
bay 2 has a sashed window with glazing bars and the remains of a C17th surround,
bay 3 has one of 4 lights with mullions, bay 4 has a cross window, and bay 5
a 6-light mullioned and transomed window. The 1st floor windows are mullioned
and of 4, 2, 4, 3 and 3 lights. The chimneys, with moulded copings and
weathered offsets, are between bays 2 and 3 and between bays 4 and 5. The
gables have copings with kneelers. Both have a 10-light mullioned and transomed
window on each floor, the north gable also having a circular moulded attic window
with hood. The east wall of the main house has,to the south of the wing, a
blocked window with hood at the left on each floor. To the right is a 2-light
mullioned window on the 1st floor with a door with plain stone surround below.
To the north of the wing the east wall has a brick lean-to addition with a
blocked window with hood above. To the right on the 1st floor is a 4-light
mullioned window. Below is a hood mould to a blocked window, with a door with
plain reveals set within it. The south wall of the east wing is of 2 bays, with
cross windows on the ground floor and 2-light mullioned windows on the 1st floor,
all with hoods. Between is a doorway with a cyma moulding which continues around
a shaped lintel. The north wall of the wing has 2 former 2-light windows with
hoods on the 1st floor. On the ground floor to the left is a blocked window
with hood. Cutting into it on the right is a doorway blocked to form a window,
with a cyma moulding and with a lintel with date and initials remove. Above
is a plaque with moulded border: 'NVNC MEA MOX HVIVS SED POSTEA NESCIO CVIVS
NEMO SIBI NATVS'. This is an unusual position for a main doorway and may have
been moved. The east gable has a chimney. Interior. The northern fireplace
of the main range has a wide moulded segmental arch, with an outer chamfer
around the voussoirs. The pantry, at the south end, has a very large sandstone
slab on a brick base. The rear wing has a dividing wall of vertical panels
with moulded muntins and rails. The dog-leg stair has 3 flights with square
moulded newels and turned balusters.
