TL 47 NE HADDENHAM HILL ROW
(North side)
8/16 Nos 54, 56, 58, 60
(Union Yard)
II
House, divided into four dwellings. Early C18 subdivided in mid-late C19.
Red brick. Flemish bond, on plinth with moulded brick upper edge. Modern
plain tiled roof with wood modillion eaves cornice; end parapets on kneelers.
End and ridge stacks. Original lobby entry plan, altered when the house was
subdivided. Two storeys and attic with band between courses. The dormers
have been removed. Symmetrical first floor facade of five c20 wood cross
frame casements in original openings under gauged brick arches with tuck
pointing. At ground floor the original lobby entry doorway is now blocked and
paired doorways inserted, each with a porch of red brick and black mortar
courses, and tiled roof with steep end parapet on shaped stone kneelers.
Chamfered segmental outer arch. Two doorways off each porch lead to the
dwellings. Three ground floor windows in original openings under similar
gauged brick arches with fine tuck pointed mortar courses. The west gable end
has limestone quoins. A blocked gable end attic window had a stone with the
date 1659 incorporated in the blocking. This may be the date of house but the
brickwork suggests a similarity with early C18 houses in Haddenham eg no 68
Hill Row, dated 1735 (qv).
