Includes Amber House, Fore Street. Shop and associated dwelling house, now re-
partitioned to make 2 dwellings. Mid C19; altered. Cross-wall construction, with
stone cross walls and lath-and-plaster front wall, all rendered; slate roof and
brick chimneys. Long rectangular double-depth plan on corner site, with former
shop to right on corner with Fore Street. Two storeys, 4+2 bays to Church Street
and 2 bays to Fore Street; plinth, plain pilasters to the corners; doorway to No.1
in 3rd bay, up 3 steps, has wooden architrave with moulded consoles and cornice,
panelled reveal, and recessed panelled door with overlight; 2 windows to the left
and one to the right (now incoporated with Amber House), and 4 at 1st floor,
all 12-pane sashes with exposed boxes and moulded wooden architraves. The 5th
and 6th bays have matching windows at 1st floor, and the former shop window
at ground floor has been replaced with similar windows which have higher sills.
Hipped roof with projecting eaves, chimney at left gable. The facade to Fore
Street has a central doorway with wooden pedimented architrave, and 2 similar
12-pane sashed windows on each floor. Rear: service wing, and various 12-pane
sashed windows. Interior of No.l: drawing room has moulded plaster cornice
with anthemions and other foliation, kitchen has very large fireplace with
original wooden architrave and mantelpiece; large and elegant dog-legged
staircase with stick balusters and wreathed curtail.
