Lime-kiln. Mid - late C19. Squared limestone with red brick dressings and
internal vaulting; timber and steel (re-used railway rails) framework for
former hoists, loading platforms and balcony. Rectangular on plan:
approximately 30 metres by 13 metres at base, with intersecting round-arched
tunnel vaults at ground level and upper stages. Stands beside railway
siding to north-west. Tapering 5-stage tower, approximately 15 metres high:
east half partly buried up to second stage by spoil dump from nearby cement
works. North-east side: central full-height recessed section containing
openings and remains of heavy timber framework for former doors or loading
platforms. Bottom stage has central round-headed opening flanked by smaller
similar openings (centre and left arches obscured by spoil dump). Second
stage: central round-headed arch with remains of hinged timber framework in
front. Third stage: wide round-arched opening. Fourth stage: string course
with steel rail between single brick courses, with projecting steel supports
for former balcony; small square opening. Top stage: similar string course,
small circular opening, projecting single-course masonry band with blocking
course above. All openings have brick arches or surrounds. South-west
side: openings to bottom stage obscured; round-headed opening to second
stage flanked by pairs of small square openings; round-headed opening above
flanked by balcony supports; string course; top stage has string course with
steel rail cutting across round-headed opening. North-west and south-east
sides have pair of round-headed openings to bottom stage, 4 small square
openings to second stage, string course with steel rail, pair of round-
headed openings to third stage, pair of larger round-arched openings to
balcony stage, string course and blank top stage. All openings have brick
arches or surrounds, and most have projecting steel rails at bases, probably
to support loading platforms. Disused and derelict at time of resurvey.
