alterations. Probably for one of the Sheffield family. Yellow-grey
gault brick with wooden eaves cornice, slate roof. 2 storeys, 5 bays;
symmetrical. Stone steps to central entrance with attached Doric
columns supporting an open dentilled pediment. Panelled door beneath
radial fanlight in pannelled reveals and soffit. Unequal 20-pane sashes
to ground floor, 16-pane sashes above, all with ashlar cills and
channelled and keyed stucco cambered arches. Bold dentilled eaves
cornice. Hipped roof and end stacks with blue brick caps and square
chimney pots. Left and right returns have angle pilasters with the
terminal returns of the eaves cornice. Interior: stair-hall has moulded
plaster cornices and ceiling with central fan motif, staircase with
slender turned balusters and sweeping handrail. Ground floor front
rooms have boldly-reeded plaster cornices with lion's head and flower
bosses, and an arched alcove in the north room with fan decoration in a
reeded architrave and reveal. Other original features include doors,
architraves and window shutters. The 2 chimney-pieces in the ground
floor front rooms (one mid-late C18 in marble with carved figure centre-
piece) are insertions of 1982. The range of 1982 is not of special
interest.
