Town Hall, dated 1897. Squared limestone with limestone ashlar dressings;
slate roof. 3 bays wide, 5 bays deep. 2 storeys. Moulded ashlar plinth,
raised quoins. Central round-arched entrance with pair of panelled doors
and fanlight in chamfered ashlar surround with moulded imposts and raised
keystone. Round-arched casements to either side with similar surrounds and
bracketed cills. First floor has 3 similar, taller, windows with cill band.
Pediment with moulded raking cornice and flat band at base inscribed:
'DIAMOND JUBILEE TOWN HALL' with a section of moulded cornice above centre.
Oculus in tympanum with radial glazing bars and keyed diamond-shaped
surround inscribed with date. Lateral stacks. Right return has central
round-headed entrance and first floor window, both flanked by square-headed
windows, all in ashlar surrounds. Built of materials salvaged from the
former prison of 1789. Included for group value.
