II

Toll house for turnpike road. Datestone 1864. Dressed granite brought to course at
front, otherwise mixed rubble; dressed granite quoins, jambstones, sills and lintels.
Grouted scantle slate roofs with granite coped gable ends, hipped over canted porch
at front, roll moulded black-glazed ridge tiles, lower parallel gable ended wings at
rear, the left hand wing with granite coped gable. 2 lateral brick chimneys over the
original rear wall, 3 circa late C19 octagonal clay chimney pots with moulded
cornices. Cast-iron ogee gutters.
Plan: originally probably 2 rooms with canted entrance porch for observing the
highway at the front. Extended circa late C19 with 2 parallel one-room plan rear
wings at right angles to the rear, first the left hand wing then the right hand wing.
Chimneys rebuilt contemporary with the wings.
Single storey. Symmetrical 1:1:1 bay 4 windows south front. Central canted porch
with central doorway and window in each side wall and window to middle of each bay
left and right. All circa late C19 4-pane sashes.
Interior not inspected.
A. later C19 development of toll house design and virtually unaltered since the late
Cl9.
