Public house. Circa 1835. Dressed sandstone, Welsh slate roof and grey brick
chimneys. Symmetrical, 2-storey, 3-bay front has raised-and-chamfered quoins.
Openings in flush stone surrounds. Central, late C20 door, with replaced 2-pane
sash to left and early C20 glazed shop front to right. Three 6-pane sashes
above with segmental-headed upper lights. Roof has 2 end chimneys and a later
axial stack rising near eaves at right end.
The Grey Horse Public House (formerly the Surtees Arms) was the home of local
mine-owner, publican and rail-coach pioneer, Daniel Adamson. Listed for historic
interest.
