Description

ST NEOT -
SX 26 NW
10/117 South Draynes Old Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse, now abandoned. Late C17, with some alterations of C19 and C20.
Slatestone and granite rubble. Slate and slurried slate roof, some scantle slates
and some rag slates, with ridge tiles and gable ends; gable end stack to left with
slate cornice and shaped top, stack removed to right. Formerly slate-hung at first
floor.
Plan: This appears to be a 2-room plan; the parlour to left, heated by a gable end
stack, is unusually large in proportion to the kitchen to right, also heated by a
gable end stack. There does not seem to be evidence of a partition, which would have
created a small unheated room to the left of the entrance. There is a stair inserted
in the passage, probably in C19; 2 single storey outshuts, one behind the room to
right and one behind the room to left, each with access from the rear of the room.
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 4-window front, with casements of varied sizes at
first floor. Ground floor has 3-light C20 casement to left, open-fronted porch with
pitched slate roof, benches to sides and inner door removed. 2-pane light to right.
Formerly slate-hung at first floor. First floor has 2-pane light to right and left,
two 2-light casements to centre of 12 panes each with L hinges. Left end blind.
Right end has single storey stable attached with slurried slate roof with handmade
ridge tiles, door to front and lower front lean-to. At the rear, the outshut forms a
catslide roof, and has a 2-light casement to the right side with timber lintel.
Interior: Slate floor throughout the ground floor. Kitchen to right has roughly hewn
beams, fireplace with granite jambs and flat wooden lintel, C19 mantel and oven to
rear right. Straight stair inserted in the passage. Large room to left has
fireplace with granite jambs and flat timber lintel. Some beams survive with narrow
chamfers.
Roof: of 7 bays, with chamfered principal rafters, halved and pegged at the apex,
with cambered collars pegged to the principal rafters. 2 rows of trenched purlins.
