Farmhouse. Dated ISMS 1640, possibly incorporating earlier building, with substantial
remodelling and enlarging of the mid C19 and few later alterations. Granite rubble,
with granite dressings and quoins. Slate roof with crested ridge tiles and gable
ends; gable end stack to left, axial stack and rear lateral stack to right with shaped
granite top.
Plan: 3-room plan with stair hall replacing a passage; room to right heated by rear
lateral stack and possibly originally a hall; room to left heated by axial stack
and room to end left by gable end stack. The stair hall appears to have been enlarged
from an original passage, and a front gabled bay possibly extended in the mid C19
in front of the room to left of the original passage. There is a 2-storey service
wing, including a diary, to the rear of the central room. The original plan is
unclear; the room to end left appears to have been a kitchen, and the room to right
a hall.
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 4-window front, with the projecting gabled bay
second from left and a porch set in the angle to right. All windows are 3-light
casements in granite, hollow-chamfered, with leaded lights of late C19 or early C20;
hoodmoulds continued as string course at ground and first floors. The porch has
a hipped roof supported on a granite pier, plain door with strap hinges. Niche above,
said to have been originally for a coat of arms; at first floor to right, the date-
stone with initials ISMS for John and Mary Smith. Left end blind. Right end has
4-light granite casement at ground and first floor, each with king mullions and hood-
mould, the first floor hoodmould continued as a string course. The rear has external
lateral stack to left, with 2-Light and 3-light granite casements at first floor.
2-storey rear service wing with covered way at ground floor, half-glazed door and
3-light granite casement at ground and first floor. Left side of wing has 3-light
and 2-light granite casement at ground floor, first floor has early C20 addition.
Rear right of main range has 3-light granite casement at ground floor.
Interior: The front right room has a C17 surround to the fireplace for the rear
lateral stack; this is in granite, with a wide segmental arch, hollow-chamfered,
with a vestigial ogee and carved panels with geometric designs. The room above
retains only the hearth stone for the fireplace, blocked. The room to end left has
a flat granite lintel to the fireplace, with oven to right and possible smoking
chamber to left, now a cupboard. Slate mantel on corbels.
