Former Union Workhouse. 1839, by J.B. & W. Atkinson (York).
Chevron dressed sandstone with tooled margins. Hipped Welsh
slate roof; 2 stacks. 2 storeys. Plain late classical. 7 bays
of which ends project slightly forward. Painted rusticated and
vermiculated quoins at angles. Slightly recessed ground floor
windows with moulded stone sills and lintels, except end bays
which have shouldered architraves continued to the ground. First
floor sills and lintels are continued as string courses. Early
C.20 casements. Central. doorway with moulded stone architrave
and consoles supporting cornice hood. Mid C.20 door, rectangular
fanlight. Listing includes lower, adjoining (S) wing which
projects forward of the main building. Mid C.19. Same materials
as hospital. Gable end fronts onto Northgate. 2 storeys. First
floor semi-circular window at head of round-headed recessed
panel. The additions adjoining the rear (E. side), and further
S. are not of interest.
