House, on the site of a medieval hunting lodge, with Henry VIII associations.
C16, mid C19. Mainly brick walls, and a tile roof. Large Tudor timber-framed
house, with central hall and crosswings, reclad with minor mid C19 extensions,
including restoration features. The front (south) is the outside wall of the
large wing, and it has an east side lower addition of the C19; 2 storeys and
attic, 3.1 windows. ½-hipped roof, one hipped dormer with sashes, shafted
stack: the east side having a ½-hipped gabled above the upper window. The
upper wall is tile-hung above a brick dentil 1st floor band, the lower of red
brickwork in English bond, with cambered openings; the east side has stretcher
bond. Sashes, one old central upper leaded casement. Victorian doorway in the
east side. To the rear, the long west elevation is a timber frame with reclad
wall, part of stone with brick dressings, part of brickwork in English bond,
and half of it completely tile hung. Casements, one French window and an entrance
with a canopy on brackets. The north elevations (of the north-end cross-wing and
the rear of the south wing) have exposed framing with brick infill and other
walling. The irregular east elevation includes much C19 work, in vernacular style.
