SIMONBURN THE GREEN
NY 8773
(West side, off)
19/147 Garden walls with
privy, wash house
and shed to east
of The Rectory
II

Garden walls with privy, wash house and shed. Mid-late C18 walls; early C19
buildings. Walls: squared sandstone; north and east walls have hand-made
brick inner faces in irregular English garden wall bond. Squared stone
buildings with Welsh slate roofs; lean-to shed has stone-flagged roof. Walls
enclose a square-plan garden; privy near south-west corner; wash house at
north-west corner; lean-to shed on centre of outer face of north wall.

Flat-coped walls. Tall c.35-metre long-double-skin north wall was formerly
heated by flues linked to 3 tiers of small segmental-headed coal furnaces,
now blocked but still visible on outer face; several battered abutments on
outer face. 45-metre long east wall has ramped up north section with 2
stepped buttresses. Lower 40-metre long south wall has rounded south-west
corner. Similar 30-metre long west wall has off-centre doorway with
alternating jambs is ramped up at junction with wash house.

Small privy, built inside garden on rear of raised section of wall, has
partly-glazed 6-panel door and wood seat with 3 openings. Single-storey, 3-
bay wash house: east bay in garden has 16-pane sash and slate roof with end
stack; other 2 bays are roofless. Single-storey, 2-bay lean-to shed on outer
face of north wall has 2 segmental arches and a low pent roof.

Later lean-to additions at north-east corner, on outer face of east wall
(i.e. to rear of Rectory Terrace) and short section of wall running from
south-east corner to Rectory Terrace are not of special interest.
