8/5 Gateway to Orchard 50m W
of Estate Office at Longwood

GV II

Gateway and attached stables. Circa 1880 by G Devey. Gateway flint with stone
dressing, timber-frame upper stage tilehung and plain tile roof, stables brick with
tiled roof. 3 storey tower with 4-centred dressed stone arch, rectangular window
above with corbelled and crenellated stone sill and wrought iron screen. Jettied
top storey with splayed tile hanging over joist ends. Hipped roof with overhanging
eaves. Each side single storey stable with tall roof. Stable doors replaced by
wider double doors, but door and window survive to left. Roof half-hipped against
side of tower and gabled on outer end. To right further stable and cartshed
completing front range and cottages (q v) completing range at other end.
