Farmhouse. C15, altered and extended 1678. Timber-frame, remodelled and
infilled with red brick, plain tiled roof, brick stacks one off-centre, one
lateral stack at left and paired diagonal chimneys on lateral stack at right;
curvilinear right hand end gable. Probably an open hall house with service
at left and solar cross-wing to right; cross-wing remodelled and extension to
right for John Collins. 2 storeys and attics with basement at right. Centre
section is former 2-bay hall and cross-passage: narrow rectangular panels and
C20 casement windows; 4-light mullion and transom rear window with ovolo moulded
mullions and surrounds (inner shutters); off-centre C20 door. Service end now
obscured by projecting wing, formerly used as a hop barn. Gabled cross-wing
at right with brick modillion string courses and C20 casement windows; date
plaques in each gable. Set back at the far right is late C17 brick extension
with brick modillion string course and lateral stack. Rear timber-framed stair
tower and adjoining gabled section. Interior: Chamfered beams with scroll
stops and framed ceiling. Ground floor right has early - mid C18 china cup-
board with cut bracket shelves, panelled doors and fluted pilasters. Rear
newel staircase.
