17/48 The Station House
II
Former station-master's house now private dwelling, c.1836 with late C19
additions on rear. Possibly by Benjamin Green for the Newcastle and Carlisle
Railway Co. Tooled-and-margined ashlar; Welsh slate roofs; ashlar chimneys.
T-plan: 2-storey, one-bay block with single-storey, 3-bay wing at right-angles
across rear. Tudor style. Chamfered plinths. Single-light and 2-light windows
in chamfered surrounds: some under hoodmoulds; some blocked and some with
replaced sashes. 2-storey, gable-fronted block: small canted oriel window on
first floor; steeply-pitched roof has coped gables with shaped kneelers and
finial at apex; cross-axial chimney with 3 cylindrical stacks at rear end.
Single-storey wing across rear: similar roof details and central cross-axial
chimney with 2 cylindrical stacks; entry via doorway on right rear; later C19
one-bay addition on left rear. Later lean-to additions on rear are not of
special interest.
