17/51 Barn north-west
of Burncliffe
II*
Threshing barn now used for storage. Probably late C17. Coursed rubble;
right gable end rebuilt in brick in mid C20. Heather-thatched roof under
corrugated-iron sheeting. Single storey, 5 internal bays. Roughly-squared
quoins. Central opposed doorways with replaced paired doors; front doorway
flanked by low stone walls. Small window openings at right and on left return.
Steeply-pitched roof. Interior: stone-flagged threshing floor with later
cobbled byre floor to right. Roof structure has wany, adzed beams of heavy
scantling: 4 pairs of full crucks; renewed lower collars; original halved and
pegged upper collars project to carry lapped purlins; crucks halved and crossed
to carry ridge piece; closely-spaced rafters. Later loft floor inserted at
right.
An extremely rare example in the county of a heather-thatched cruck barn.
