Small detached cottage, formerly a small hall house. C15, altered
in C17 and C19. Timber-framed with square panels, with some
original plastered wattle and daub infill and some brick, faced in
brick to south and west, on plinth of part stone part brick,
pantile roof raised above remains of original thatched medieval
roof still in situ, with inserted C17 stack to south with brick end
flue. Single-storey hall house of 2 bays with hall and adjoining
chamber both open to the roof, converted into 2 cottages in C19,
each with door on west side. Clasped purlin roof with queen strut
collar and dual braced tie beams; blackened central truss and
rafters survive. East side has to left original segmental headed
doorway blocked by later stack and former window (also blocked) to
chamber over present wide doorway to right. C17 alterations
include brick nogging to frame panels, brick stack to south gable
end, chamfered bressumer to fireplace, insertion of ceiling for
attic with joists resting on chamfered and ogee-stopped spine beams
carried on jowled inserted posts, and 2-light wood mullion window
to attic on south gable end. Conversion during C19 into 2 cottages
included refacing of west wall in brick with 2 boarded doors and
two 2-light casements, and small brick lean-to to south gable end.
This building is a very rare survival of a small 2-cell late
medieval hall house retaining its single plan form and many
original features of C15 and C17.
