House. C17, altered late C18, early C20. Timber-framed, rendered
over with wet dash, since largely covered with dummy close-studded
framing. Flemish-bond brickwork to rear wing and porch: roof
tiled except right return, shingles. 'H'-plan, 4-bay centre, 2
and 3 bay wings. Front: applied timber-framing over brick plinth,
1 panel high ground floor, 2 first floor. Windows largely leaded
lights, mullion and transom, of same date as applied framing. To
right, projecting gable; 3-light window. In angle to recessed
centre projecting early C20 brick porch, 4-light iron casement
window, flat head: blocked door left return, altered to window.
Centre boarded door with narrow side-lights under open gabled
porch, carried on 4 Jacobean style columns: 3-light window either
side. Single-storey canted bay, hipped roof on left gable, 3-light
window, plain glass lower part. First floor 2-light window right
gable and in porch, latter with cambered brick arch. Coved eaves
to centre, 3 irregularly spaced 2-light casement windows below: 3-
light casement in left gable. Plain bargeboards to gables with
timber apex finial: hipped dormer right of centre, 2-light
casement. Brick chimney on ridge behind timber porch, also on
ridge to right wing towards rear; brick chimney left return.
Internally: ceiling of room to right of timber porch divided into
9 by heavy chamfered beams, with double-splayed stops. Door to
rear on right 7 fielded panels, 'Y' tracery to semi-circular head,
fielded panels to spandrels over, with dummy keystone. Room to
front right gable panelled on 3 sides, moulded cornice over, 2
plain beams morticed for separate ceiling joists. Bar stop to
heavy chamfer in ceiling beam, room behind. Dogleg stairs behind
brick porch, dividing 2 ways at hal.f landing, moulded handrail,
turned balusters. Two-panel doors first floor, off stairs,
original hinges and latches. Beams right room centre similar stops
to room below, but smaller chamfer. Original timber framing
exposed right wing first floor and right part of centre: main
posts and some framing to left wing. One original window to rear
of centre part, first floor, 2-light ovolo-moulded mullion and
transom with iron opening light. Centre roof 2 pairs purlins,
square ridge. Shingles said to replace stone slates. Left wing
extended at rear early C20: altered slightly following fire
1950's. Forms group with bakehouse and barn (q.v.).
