Balustrades, terrace walls and steps, piers, gates, statues and sundial. East
terrace and garden 1910 by Robert Mauchlen; south and west terraces may be
late C19. Walls rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings; except for south and
west balustrades which are cast artificial stone on squared-stone base; lead
statue; wrought iron gates. Plan: Terrace walls close to house on south and
west. At east terrace wall faces formal garden with low internal terrace at
end nearest house, flanked by enclosures with rectangular ponds. Central
sundial. East corner sections have end alcoves and benches; between these
a group of piers screening a circular pond and gateway.
West terrace has gateway at each end; south terrace has projecting centre
section and gateway at east end.
East terrace wall has central scrolly double gates flanked by low piers with
balusters at angles and wells on top for plants. At each side 3-bay
balustrades; at ends wing walls, with downswept coping, flank rectangular
ponds; taller piers with plant wells flank west ends of side walks. Seat
alcoves at east ends of walks have open balustraded backs. Sundial has
octagonal base, with paired balusters, and circular shaft carrying block with
4 dial faces and moulded knob finial. Statue in circular pond is nude female
holding sea shell. Terminal gate has large elliptical open panel, overthrow
with seahorse design and vase-of-flowers finial. Piers have flat-topped
moulded caps; walls flat-coped. Another statue, of soldier with crossbow,
on pier at south-east corner.
