NETHERWITTON WITTON SHIELDS
NZ 19 SW NZ 124904
5/155 Garden and yard walls
west of Witton Shields
Tower
GV II
Remains of former louse, now garden and yard walls, perhaps medieval. Roughly-
shaped large blocks with irregular quoins. The remains comprise the west and
north walls of a north-south building with a large stack at the north end and
a later addition beyond, generally surviving to a height of 1.5 - 2 metres.
Slopstone in the west wall; various blocked openings. The unusual positioning
of the doorway, now blocked, in the west end of Witton Shields Tower (q.v.)
appears to align with a doorway in the remaining stub of the east wall at the
ruined house, suggesting that the latter is of C16 or earlier date.
