Description

KINGS NYMPTON KINGS NYMPTON
SS 61 NE
3/164 East Wells
GV II
Farmhouse, now private dwelling. Early C16, remodelled probably in late C17, with
C19 alterations and remodelled again in late C20. Painted roughcast rendered stone
rubble and cob. Half-hipped thatch roof. Brick stack at right end and stone rubble
lateral stack with brick shaft to rear left end.
Plan: 2-room and central entrance plan, formerly with central staircase which was
removed in C20. Left-hand room heated by rear lateral stack, with second staircase
to its right in rear outshut; both fireplaces have bread ovens. Formerly an open-
hall house, the smoke-blackening extending from end to end, of 3 bays, the purlins
between the 2 trusses are chamfered and stopped. The roof over the right end has
been modified so that it is not possible to ascertain whether the farmhouse may have
originally extended to the right. The fireplace lintels would suggest a late C17
date for the insertion of the floors but the C19 and C20 alterations have been so
extensive as to render the original plan irrecoverable.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 2-window range. 4 over 8 paned sashes. C20 fenestration to
ground floor. C20 porch with thatched hipped roof. Rusticated quoins. Pantiled
roof to rear outshut.
Interior: extensively altered in C20. Both fireplaces have slightly cambered
lintels with thin chamfers. Cloam oven to fireplace to left-hand room, brick oven to
right-hand room fireplace.
Roof: 2 trusses, probably raised crucks but feet have been sawn off, with cranked
morticed and tenoned collars, 2 tiers of threaded purlins and threaded ridge purlin.
The purlins between the 2 trusses are chamfered with pyramid stops. The left end
truss is closed above the collar with a clay daub partition. All the roof members
including rafters and battens and some surviving thatch, are thoroughly smoke-
blackened.
