Inn, 1912 (probably by George Jack), dated over the door, for Sir
Hugh Bell. Reconstructed using stone of previous inn which had to
be moved for realignment of road. Finely herringbone-tooled coursed
sandstone; pantiled roof with tile ridge and stone stacks. L-plan.
South front 2 storeys, 5 bays, slightly irregular with long added
projecting 1-storey right wing. Porch in second bay has boarded
door in left return and 2-light Yorkshire sash in front. Other
windows 3- and 4-light Yorkshire sashes with glazing bars except
for single light in 4th bay ground floor. Larger ground-floor
windows have extended joggled lintels with flush keystones. Swept
roof with exposed rafter ends and cornice-banded stacks, one at
left end and 2 on ridge. Left return gable has large projecting
central stack with offsets. Small flanking casements on first
floor, 2-light Yorkshire sash, with keyed lintel, below and pigeon
alighting shelves above: (Small wrought iron name and date on
bracket). Projecting central rear wing with gable at left, lean-to
at right,has mostly small Yorkshire sashes.
Backyard wall with shed at left, and 1-storey outbuilding range
beyond, linked by pair of gate piers, but gate missing; boarded
doors and small similar windows.
The added 1-storey range in front has 3 boarded doors to guest rooms.
Interior: Wide half-glazed inner porch door in doubled-reeded
surround with shaped head; central Bell rebus in panel flanked by
figures 19 and 12. Main bar room has chamfered beams pegged to
posts, monumentally simple dressed-stone fireplace at west end with
segmental head, key and impost blocks; and at east end a small
stone fireplace with rusticated surround,roll-moulded mantel and
coved overmantel, all in wood inglenook frame. Panelled bar.
Splendid quasi-Carolean staircase with pierced splat balusters and
panelled closed string. Good 2-panel doors throughout.
