Hotel of 2 builds. No 42: probably a C16 hall house with service entrance moved and
upper end rebuilt. C17 and C18 alterations, top storey added post 1815. Part timber
framed and brown brick. Slate roof. 3 storeys. Symmetrical facade. Central
entrance. Wooden doorcase with pilasters and a large flat hood with dentilled
cornice. Round-headed doorway. To each side a canted bay with sash windows with
glazing bars. To the 1st floor 2 large tripartite sash windows with glazing bars in
flush moulded cases, shallow segmental arched heads. Their cills form a continuous
band. Wrought iron sign bracket. To the 2nd floor 3 16-pane sash windows. No 44:
late C18 or early C19. Brown brick. Slate roof of shallower pitch than that of No 42
with stone verges and kneelers. Higher and narrower than No 42. 3 storey canted bay.
Arched sash windows with Gothick glazing in groups of 3 with taller central light.
Cills form continuous bands. Carriageway to left. Interior: No 42 some exposed
timber including an inglenook beam. The front room to the right of the entrance has a
C17 ceiling divided into square panels by raised borders. No 44: ground floor sash
window has fixed light. C20 extension at rear not included. Was a famous posting
