II
Farmhouse now two dwellings. Probably late C17 with earlier core, much altered. Coursed rubble sandstone, C20 cement-tile roof. Elongated two-storey range, six windows to first floor, partial outshut to rear. Large quoins. Original house-part on left has part-glazed door in quoined surround flanked by three-light casements with quoined reveals, two-light window on right has recessed mullion. Converted outbuilding under same roof on right has large sixteen-pane sash, C20 three-light mullioned window and C20 French window. First floor: all two-light horizontally-sliding sashes in quoined openings, small window over door on left. Shaped kneelers, chamfered gable copings, two ridge stacks each with band. Rear: arched doorway on left possibly of early date, some sash windows.
Interior: cruck truss exposed in partition wall between the two dwellings has wall spurs set below tie beam which is morticed for infill, collar beneath cruck ends clasping remains of diagonally-set ridge now much lower than present roofline. The truss and long-house form of the building suggest a late medieval date for the original structure.
Ancestral home of the Elmhirst family.
