Farmhouse, possibly a longhouse, alternately rebuilt, on site of an
earlier grange of Rievaulx Abbey. Early C18 with alterations,
several builds. Main house herringbone-tooled sandstone on a low
plinth, regularly coursed. Larger stonework in lower part of
downhouse, medium-sized above. Outbuilding coursed pecked sandstone
on plinth. Pantiled roofs with stone ridges,copings, kneelers and
stacks. Hearth-passage plan. 2 storeys; 2-window main house, narrower
2-window downhouse. Modern passage door in right of downhouse.
Small fire window to right. Other windows modern casements in old
openings (except 1 altered opening to left of door). High-pitched
roof with block kneelers, corniced ridge and end chimneys. 2-storey,
2-bay outbuilding at left has 2 stable doors and 2 small windows
all under one long, heavy dressed lintel in 5 parts. External stone
stair to boarded door in gable end. 2 gabled rear extensions and a
lower lean-to. Beamed ceilings in house. Extruded part-timbered
porch is not of special interest.
