Wall. Early C19 or earlier. Limestone and brick. Approximately 4 metres
high and 100 metres long, aligned roughly north-south with a change in the
angle at the centre. The northern half is of grey limestone with 3 bands of
white blocks alternating with grey; the southern half is brick, in English
bond of one course headers to 6 courses stretchers and with the limestone
blocks continuing. Gritstone or ashlar coping. Forms the eastern boundary
of the huge enclosed garden serving Studley Royal which is shown on the
tithe map of 1838. The garden sheltered by this wall contained glasshouses
and probably fruit trees. It may also have enclosed the nursery beds for
the hundreds of trees required by John Aislabie's planting scheme in the
1720s and later.
