courtyard at Ripley
Castle

GV II

Sundial. Late C18 or early C19. Pale gritstone. 2-tier circular base;
vase baluster with diagonal fluting, approximately 1.5 metres high. Marble
capstone with bronze gnomon inscribed "Tho Wright". The sundial stood in
the centre of a circular lawn when the carriage drive passed round the
courtyard; the painting of the old house made c1780 shows a similar though
more slender sundial. Ripley Castle Guide, p 4.
